about

My arrangement for "X-eYeZ" was inspired by a friend with whom I graduated from Lawrence Conservatory (Appleton, WI) in 1965. She requested I play "Star Eyes" on this album. So, rather than play it straight, I thought of combining it with another "eyes" tune, which turned out to be "Angel Eyes" which happens to be one of a local friend's favorites. Since both tunes adhere to the AABA format, I played around with the concept of superimposing them. Although I did not have the charts for either tune in its original key, nor did I transpose either one of them so they could be superimposed in the same key, it works out well as is, especially when I reharmonized the bridge. Since "X-Files" is one of my favorite shows, and its ethereal musical theme suggests extra-terrestrial life, I was inspired to interweave it with "Star Eyes" and "Angel Eyes" as an introduction, followed by the two melodies superimposed, then a medley of the two tunes in a jazz format.
