about

My arrangement of "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" was initially inspired by six reharmonizations I came up with for the "A" section of this tune as an assignment for a reharmonization course I took in the late 1980s from Laurie Altman at Westminster Conservatory in Princeton, NJ. Earlier this year, while deciding on tunes and arrangements for this CD, I found myself inspired to arrange something my three sisters (flutist, violist, cellist) could play on. So, with Tyrone, of course a quartet was the logical choice, except for the bridge which is for jazz trio only.
Each of the six "A" sections for the two heads is based on a different reharmonization, voiced for quartet. However, the "A" sections of the choruses are all duets, with each duet being a different combination of flute, viola, cello and bass (again, each a different harmonization). To my amazement I discovered that there are exactly six possible combinations, which is based on the formula "X times 3/2", or, as in this case, 4 times 3/2 = 6.
